barry whitney resume The Problem of essay rubric grade 8, Evil: Aesthetic Considerations. By Barry Whitney. Few would b e willing to argue an intellectually viable resolution of the problem of evil ('theodicy')1 is possible. I wish to propose, nonetheless, that aesthetic considerations may be the basis for such a resolution. I refer to it as an how to write interview in research paper, “aesthetic solution” although its aesthetic aspects do not constitute the essay grade 8 entire theodicy. The solution may seem disconcertingly harsh and unconventional, but given the current state of discussions on the theodicy issue, I think the solution proposed here is sound and an appropriate option that ought to be pursued in theodicy discussions.2 One of its strengths is using paper that it does not succumb to what I shall describe as an illicit, question-begging methodology utilized in many theodicies, both historically and contemporaneously. I wish to point out that I am not disputing the veridity of certain beliefs held in faith.
That is quite another matter. What I am disputing, however, is the presumption of these beliefs within a rational theodicy. God's existence cannot be presupposed either as a belief held in faith or as an a priori necessity,8 since it is rubric 8 this very belief in God which is challenged by the evil and suffering in the world. A rational, intellectually viable theodicy must provide convincing reasons to justify belief in God's existence, despite the world's evil; it must provide also a defensible interpretation of the math divine attributes and demonstrate persuasively why belief in God is not undermined by the pervasiveness of the evil and suffering which saturate our existence. If theodicy assumes God's existence and/or the related beliefs (that evil and suffering are means by which God attains good ends, or that God is testing us, or punishing us, that evil is the result of the Adamic 'fall', that there is an afterlife compensation and/or fulfilment provided by God, that suffering is caused by essay 8, evil powers, or that suffering has been redeemed by Christ, etc.), all of math homework, this presupposes what is at writing, stake. A rational solution to theodicy must proceed in isolation from such beliefs, or at least hold them in suspension. This presumably is a controversial point. But I wish to distinguish my view from using a research one possible misunderstanding.
Some time ago, Nelson Pike asserted that 'when the existence of God is accepted [in faith] prior to any rational consideration of the grade status of evil in the world, the traditional problem of write interview, evil reduces to a non-critical perplexity of relatively minor importance'.9 1 am not aware of any detailed response to this view, but my response is that the assumption of religious beliefs may perhaps resolve the problem of evil on writing rubric, the existential level, since a person's faith provides religious certainty of God's existence and this in turn provides certainty that there must be a 'morally sufficient reason' for why is the evil and suffering in the world. As such, a person is better able to cope with evil -- the 'existential' dimension of the theodicy issue.10 Yet this leaves the rational problem of evil unresolved. Faith in essay writing rubric grade God, based on biblical texts, institutional teachings, or personal religious experience, etc., may provide theists with reasons for God's causing or permitting evil (as tests, trials, punishments, and the like -- largely biblically based reasons), but this presumption of religious beliefs begs the question and, as such, seems hardly the means to a rational resolution of the problem of evil. To presuppose in faith, moreover, what rational theodicy seeks to demonstrate surely would not be acceptable to those who do not hold the unique essay same religious beliefs. There is an arrogance in such an approach, moreover, since it assumes that belief in the biblical texts somehow proves that these texts express literal truths. Yet, surely one cannot justify biblical texts by appealing to the authority of those very texts. The same question-begging methodology could be utilized by any religious tradition to essay writing grade 8 claim the 5 paragraph war veridity of its scriptures. The alternative methodological approach I am proposing, in seeking a resolution to the problem of rational theodicy, begins not with religious beliefs held in faith and justified by faith, but with empirically certain knowledge.11 But what is this certain knowledge?
I submit that there is substantial agreement that human beings are finite and imperfect creatures, the essay writing rubric grade 8 product of millions of years of evolution, of an evolutionary process which operates randomly. Whether we are more than this, whether we have a 'soul' which lives on eternally is another matter, a matter of religious belief. Vietnam? Some may feel this belief too is a certainty. Indeed, the majority of religious thinkers assume some version of this belief (as I do). Some may believe also (as I do) that there is a divine 'telos' or providence operating within the evolutionary structures, although there are various ways to interpret this divine causal activity.12 My contention, however, is writing rubric grade that the presumption of such beliefs in a rational theodicy may not be appropriate. Obviously, there is much more to essay be said about the methodological question,13 but my present task is to continue to outline my aesthetic solution. Its central theme can be stated quite tersely: despite our finite, vulnerable, and precarious nature as human beings, we have an inherent creativity, an inner drive that seeks meaningful experiences. Every creature, moreover, seeks experiences uniquely appropriate to its particular needs and circumstances. I submit that creatures not only essay grade 8, have this need for meaning and value (the former gained through the latter, as aesthetic value) but that we also have the how to write interview in research paper opportunity at writing grade, every moment -- to causes of the revolution varying degrees, of course -- to experience it. Indeed, no matter how bleak, limited, or disadvantaged our circumstances may be at essay grade, particular moments, there is always an opportunity to experience at least some aesthetic value.
This value is defined as 'aesthetic' since it is the experience of intensity and harmony, and experience which strives toward and incorporates unity amid the diversity, harmony amid the australia unique chaos.14 It is mistaken to think that absolute order, in particular, is the aesthetic goal and rubric 8, that a world without disorder, a hedonistic paradise presumably, would be the only kind of world consistent with an omnipotent and omnibenevolent deity. Experiences of pure order would be stifling to freedom and dominated by numbing predictability and conformity. Creatures seek experiences, rather, which avoid the extremes of on operating system, complete order, complete chaos or disorder, as well as avoiding the extremes of too much complexity or intensity and too much triviality or superficiality. All creatures, in grade sum, have the opportunity to actualize possibilities which bring about the how to in research paper most appropriate experiences, the best possible aesthetic experiences at each moment, experiences which can render life meaningful, despite the circumstances in essay writing rubric 8 which we may find ourselves from time to time. The rewards are immediate if the appropriate possibilities are actualised. Essay? Likewise, the punishments are immediate if the best possible values available at essay rubric grade, each moment are not actualised. Using A Research Paper? Every choice we make limits or expands our future choices. As such, it is in our best interests to choose wisely, or else future possibilities are limited more severely than otherwise would be the case. No one creature alone, I would add, is essay writing responsible for the goods or evils which befall it or any other creature. Every creature is essay on the affected not only by its own chooses, but also by the choices of other creatures, and indeed by the whims of unconscious and amoral natural forces.
Yet, despite poor choices and despite the considerable influence of others and of external forces, there is the opportunity, for essay rubric experiences of at least minimal value at every moment in the lives of all creatures, experiences of aesthetic value appropriate to every creature's nature and present situation. That this is the case even in moments of extreme despair, terror, pain, and the like, may seem unlikely (I presume) to many critics. The discussion to follow addresses this central issue, as well as other issues of math homework, direct relevance to the aesthetic theory I am proposing. Some might argue, for example, that the solution is merely an exercise in natural theology, resulting in an anti-theodicy, a humanistic anthropodicy rather than a theodicy. This critique would be understandable, since I have deliberately excluded the assumption of religious beliefs in formulating the proposed solution. The price I must pay for this seems to be the insurmountable problem of how the anthropodicy can be converted to the theodicy I seek. Theodicy, after all, seeks to justify belief in God, not merely to explain evil as a necessary product of rubric grade 8, finite reality. My contention, however, is that the aesthetic solution proposed here functions as both an anthropodicy and a theodicy. The anthropodicy, in using a research sum, and writing rubric grade 8, some of its major implications, are as follows.
We exist as finite creatures and as the result of blind and random evolutionary forces. The natural laws which support our existence as human beings affect us in an amoral and unconscious manner. Essay? As such, there is no reason why any creature should expect to writing rubric grade 8 experience anything other than minimal value, let alone maximum value, a surplus of presentation system, value, or complete fulfilment.15 To expect more than minimal value would be asking to be other or more than what we are: we are finite creatures, free (within limits) and capable of experiencing a sense of meaning through the essay writing grade 8 appropriation or actualization of possibilities which provide aesthetic value and meaning. To expect more than this, I contend, would be tantamount to asking for divine unilateral control, for what else could guarantee more than minimal value for every creature? What else could guarantee that every creature reaps what it actually deserves? Our finite existence, I submit, is justified by the opportunity to act freely and to experience at least minimal value -- and why is, often we experience much more than merely minimal value. Rubric 8? There is no compelling reason why any creature should expect more than this. Nor is it necessary that any creature should experience as much value as the more fortunate among us, nor any good reason why we should expect to experience absolute value, a final and complete redemption from the suffering we all endure. There is no guarantee, without divine unilateral control -- a concept I regard as meaningless16 -- that more than minimal value is possible and that there will be no gratuitous, meaningless and disproportionate suffering. Indeed, since most of the evil and suffering human beings endure has its source not in natural forces but in free human choices (our own and those of paper system, others), the responsibility for evil and its unjust distribution is largely the result of human beings, not God's doing.
As such, we have the essay 8 moral responsibility to ourselves and to all other creatures to choose wisely among the possibilities available to us at each moment. Perhaps when our species acknowledges this privileged responsibility, we will learn to act accordingly. The point here is that the human species, more than any other factor, is write in research responsible for the suffering we endure. For too long theologians and philosophers have argued pointless apologetics for God's distribution of evils, assuming that evils and suffering must be attributed to God's mysterious will (despite verbal acknowledgment of essay writing grade, human freedom)17 and how to write in research, assuming also that the evils and suffering are divinely ordained (by direct causation or indirect permission)18 toward good ends. Once it is understood that most suffering, although not all, is the result of the poor choices of human beings (ourselves and others), the result of writing rubric grade, our failure to actualise the war appropriate values possible at every moment, we may be more inclined to seek to reduce significantly these poor choices. Essay Rubric Grade 8? This optimistic view, I submit, need not be realised to render the aesthetic theodicy viable. I am not under any idealistic delusion that the human species will learn to act more ethically and paper presentation system, responsibly, although I retain the hope that this might occur eventually. This much is grade largely humanistic anthropodicy. But there are various ways to essay vietnam convert the essay rubric grade anthropodicy to function also a solution to the theistic problem of theodicy. Perhaps the simplest way to do this is to acknowledge that finite creatures should expect no more of God than the opportunity to live a meaningful life, even if this life has minimal value.
We must take full cognizance of our finitude and on operating system, the considerable influence exerted on us by essay grade 8, other people, other creatures, and by natural laws. As human being, we have privileged opportunities to experience at least minimal aesthetic value, value that is appropriate to every situation into which we are thrust. The goods and evils we actualize, accordingly, are consistent with the existence of a loving and why is australia unique, powerful God. To expect the opportunity to experience all possible values is unrealistic. Essay Rubric 8? A life of pure order, a life of aesthetic ecstasy without disorder, would be possible only on the assumption of american essays, divine unilateral power -- although even on this assumption such an idealised perfect world seems impossible.19 To expect that God ought to provide us with more goods (and less evils) is to deny our finite nature, as well as the existence of the inner and outer forces which exert such a powerful influence on us all.
From God, we should expect a world in which there is writing rubric genuine freedom and the opportunity for at least minimal aesthetic value and meaning. Since this in fact is what we find, belief in God is justifiable, despite the evil and suffering we endure. There is causes american revolution another way to convert the anthropodicy to a theodicy. I have suggested that religious beliefs should not be presupposed in formulating a theodicy, but this methodological position must be qualified somewhat. Beliefs, I would contend, based on anything less than a rational foundation do not seem appropriate presuppositions for an intellectually viable theodicy. Such beliefs, as noted above, presuppose what is at issue in rational theodicy -- that God exists and that the grade 8 evil is using consistent with God's existence.
If God's existence, however, can be argued on essay rubric 8, rational grounds, rather than presupposed as a given article of faith, this would go a long way to avoid the vicious circle which inundates and discredits so many theodicies. But how can this be done? Process theists think there are persuasive grounds for theistic belief within the elaborate Whiteheadian-Hartshornean metaphysics. The argumentation for this is complex but, in using paper short, concludes that at various critical points in that metaphysical account of reality, God is the best explanation to account for the reason things are as they are. Without God, for example, it is difficult to understand how a random chaos could form a world, and without God it is difficult to explain how a realm of infinite potentiality could be made available to creatures, and so on. All of this would be challenged, I assume, by humanists (including process humanists), but without digressing to argue this complex point, my contention here is that God can be understood as the 8 source of potentiality and as the persuasive lure which enables us to appropriate the aesthetic value which gives our lives meaning.
Such a God is exonerated for permitting suffering, since God continually provides significant opportunities for math homework meaningful experiences, appropriate to rubric grade 8 every creature at every moment of its existence. I grant that at various points in a creature's life, the 5 paragraph on the war opportunities for value and meaning are minimal, but the circumstances that bring on such consequences are not due to essay grade 8 unilateral divine causation, but are attributable to our finite natures and to the forces exerted on us by an amoral nature, by other people and by system, non-human creatures (viruses, and rubric grade 8, the like). So, perhaps, the opportunity for minimal value is all we should ask of God and paper presentation on operating, all we should expect as finite creatures in a world of evolutionary randomness. I note that the writing 8 God of why is, process metaphysics is not the creator ex nihilo who, as such, would have absolute control over creatures.20 The process God, rather is essay rubric 8 conceived as an on operating, interactive Being, sine qua non, without which nothing could exist. God lures and essay rubric grade 8, persuades creatures toward the of the essays appropriate values possible at each and every moment. Writing Rubric? There is no divine guarantee that any creature will experience anything other than what the creature itself chooses, although the divine lure is powerful, and the actions of on operating system, other creatures and natural forces also affect us very significantly. Why would God create a world such as this? The divine act of creation, in luring the primeval chaos into this constantly evolving universe, with all of writing rubric, its aesthetic potential, is justified since the alternative would have been for God to math math have left the chaos merely as a chaos. But this would have resulted in the loss of all the value achieved by countless billions of creatures during the history of our physical universe.
By analogy, the decision of a man and woman to essay writing 8 procreate is similarly justified: despite the suffering the child of the union will endure, the value lost from why is australia not existing would be a great loss. The alternative, moreover, to a God whose power is writing rubric 'persuasive' rather than 'coercive' is a God whose unilateral causation would render creaturely free will problematic, to say the least, and the problem of justifying the evil and suffering this God permits would continue to australia be the serious problem it has been for theodicy. Why, for example, if God has the power to eliminate the worst evils and to do so without significantly affecting our freedom, has God not done so? Those who condemn the process God as 'too weak' or 'too limited' in essay writing power to merit worship have misunderstood the process vision of God and seem to how to in research paper think that the essay writing rubric grade 8 traditional vision of a God of absolute power is more consistent with a world saturated with evil and suffering. There have been no compelling reasons offered by such thinkers, historically or contemporaneously, to explain why this God has permitted the unique essay most appalling of these evils and why God has permitted so much apparently gratuitous evil. Relevant here is the contention of process theists, furthermore, that this God does not coerce, indeed cannot coerce its will on essay writing grade, us, but persuasively lures us to choose the of the american essays appropriate values.22 I submit that this theistic vision of a solely persuasive God, when combined with the aesthetic solution, constitutes at least one viable basis for writing grade a solution to the problem of theodicy. 5 Paragraph Vietnam War? The aesthetic theme, nonetheless, despite its importance to process theodicy, has not been sufficiently exploited by essay writing, process writers nor given the critical attention it merits by others. Why Is Australia Essay? Debates about process theodicy have been focused far more prevalently on the process theologians' reinterpretation of writing rubric 8, divine power. The aesthetic theory is at least as important, if not more so, although the on operating system version of the aesthetic theory I have proposed here does not necessarily assume the process metaphysics nor a specialist's familiarity with it. The aesthetic theory stands of its own, although process metaphysics provides a favorable context within which the aesthetic solution is rendered even stronger. But there are other issues to rubric grade consider.
One anticipated criticism likely will be that my solution is elitist?2 While privileged creatures may experience sufficient value to render their lives meaningful, hence exonerating God, do not the vast majority of creatures seem to suffer gratuitously, unjustifiably, and disproportionately? Is not the majority denied sufficient opportunity to 5 paragraph essay on the war experience the grade 8 aesthetic values experienced by the elite among us? In response, I acknowledge with empathy the presentation on operating apparently futile lives of countless millions of people, lives of despair, pain, terror, and countless other torments. Essay? I submit, nonetheless, that there can be no guarantee that finite creatures, the product of evolutionary randomness, will have equal opportunity for aesthetic value or that any creature can be guaranteed more than minimal value. Indeed, I contend that God's teleological causal influence is consistent with this position. God works continually, yet solely persuasively, within the world and within creatures to make available the appropriate opportunities for aesthetic value. The opportunities for at least minimal value are present no matter how bleak the vietnam situation in which we may find ourselves,23 although in certain desperate situations the possibilities for meaning are so minimal than they seem all but nonexistent.
This, of course, is the critical question. Is there at essay rubric grade 8, least minimal value in every moment, in the most sinister and ignoble moments? In response, I would argue, first of all, that there is no reasonable line which can be drawn between what is considered appropriate value and inappropriate value. What may be appropriate for one person in a unique circumstance may, of causes of the essays, course, not be so for others in uniquely different circumstances or even in much the same circumstances. A God who persuades creatures, rather than coerces, cannot guarantee more than this. Divine teleology (or providence) is not the heavy-handed unilateral action traditional theology has assumed. Only a God who exercises unilateral control (actually or potentially)24 could guarantee more. Yet the price that would be paid for conceiving God as a unilateral coercive power, the traditional interpretation of divine power, has been a rendering of the rubric grade theodicy problem as unresolvable and hopelessly problematic. Presentation System? Whether such a vision of God is writing rubric grade 8 meaningful is doubtful since, among other factors, it is incompatible with human freedom, despite impressive and long-standing compatibilist arguments to the contrary.25 The alternative vision of God in math homework math process theology has no need to fight this unforgiving battle. As for the problem as to whether minimal value at times seems all but nonexistent in some rather bleak situations, it may well be just that -- all but nonexistence.
Yet, value does exist, for even in situations of grade, apparently complete hopelessness, there is paper on operating some good from essay writing 8 some perspective, even if it is not experienced by the person who is suffering. I do not mean to deflect the issue from the problem of minimal value for why is essay the sufferer. Taken in context, I would suggest that the experiences which constitute the writing lifetime of how to write paper, any creature have at least minimal value. There would be no other reason for the creature to seek continued life. This contention is not merely an unsubstantiated assumption: it is justified by empirical experience, although there is much that needs to be said to justify this point.26. Essay Writing Rubric 8? The issue of how to write interview in research, elitism, however, could be pressed, especially as it relates to essay grade 8 the problem of write interview in research, gratuitous evil. It is notable that many contemporary discussions of theodicy focus on this issue of gratuitous evil,27 affirming that it is the most problematic aspect of the theodicy issue. Essay Rubric Grade 8? Granting that some evils seem necessary (as by-products of conflicting free choices or of natural laws, etc.), is not the distribution of evil unfair? Some evils may lead to good ends, but surely not all do. In response, some traditional theologians who hold fast to the traditional view of divine omnipotence, have argued that the alternative to essay vietnam gratuitous evil, a world in which there is no gratuitous evil, would be worse.28 A world in grade 8 which every good is rewarded with good, and every evil action punished with an appropriate consequence, would be a world in which the basis of morality would be undercut, since creatures would soon learn that good acts are in our (selfish) interest. We would learn to on operating system act for rewards and to avoid punishment, rather than to act for the sake of goodness itself.
I suggest that there is another and far more convincing response to the problem of gratuitous evil. If the aesthetic solution I am proposing has any validity, there is no gratuitous evil, since there is at least minimal value in writing each experience,29 even granting the prevalence of the of the revolution most hopeless, desperate, painful, and terrorizing experiences. Within the total context of a creature's experiences, there are opportunities for value and meaning, even if they are minimal. There can be no guarantee for finite creatures that God should or can guarantee more than this. For there to be more, we would have to be other than what we are, and God would have to exercise unilateral control.
Neither option is acceptable.30. Rubric 8? There is a further anticipated criticism of my aesthetic solution, one that I have levied earlier against the traditional versions: does not the 5 paragraph essay on the war aesthetic theme reduce evil to a mere illusion? If evil is the means by which we can experience aesthetic value, is evil not really a good in disguise? Does this not render evil less than genuinely evil?31 Would we not be interfering with God's plan, moreover, if we seek to eradicate the writing supposed evil with which God is working to produce good ends? In response, I contend that the traditional version of the aesthetic theory indeed does succumb to math math this oft-cited critique, since it holds that God deliberately and rubric grade 8, specifically distributes (or permits) evils for divinely preconceived good ends. How this evil is genuinely evil is problematic, at best. Yet, if we understand that evil and how to write, suffering result, rather, from rubric grade 8 a combination of poor choices of free finite beings and of amoral natural forces beyond our control, it can be understood as genuinely evil.
There is no hidden divine plan to how to write interview use evil to seek specific good ends. Our empirical experience, moreover, however limited from a divine perspective, assures us that pain and suffering are real, not goods in disguise. Yet, notwithstanding this, my aesthetic solution has argued that there is no pain or suffering in which some minimal value cannot be experienced, at least from some perspective.32 The value need not be a surplus of value in any creature's life at every moment. There need be only some value, however minute and 8, limited, for God's goodness and power (as defined by process theism) to be justified.33 Asking for a distribution of evil without disproportionate evil seems, as noted above, to be asking not only for unilateral action by God to bring this about, but that creatures be other than what we are. Math Homework Math? Exceptions merely prove the case. Those unfortunate human beings, for example, who live in rubric a state of seemingly relentless despair, fear, or pain, and causes essays, who apparently believe life is not worth living,34 rarely choose not to live. The vast majority of us go on living, despite the despair, amid the essay writing grade apparent hopelessness of pain and 5 paragraph essay on the war, terror and other such suffering. The explanation is that there is at least minimal value in human experiences, and given our experiences as a whole, there is enough meaning to render our lives tolerable at writing rubric 8, worst, and meaningful at best.35 The experiences, moreover, that provide us with more than merely minimal value serve to sustain us in the bleaker moments and of the revolution, seem to be the force behind our decision to choose to live, to continue to seek value despite the suffering and misery to which we are all condemned.
I suspect that some would demand that we should expect more. Should God not provide us with opportunities for more than minimal aesthetic value? Indeed, can God's creation of this world of suffering be justified other than by essay rubric grade, a divine guarantee that we will reach a state of ultimate value and causes of the revolution, perfection? This, of course, brings us to the question of heaven?36 of an afterlife existence, an eschatological resolution, a final redemption from suffering, all of which are prevalent in traditional and contemporary solutions to the theodicy problem. Yet, as a resolution to the problem of evil, I submit that the circular question-begging problem resurfaces.
The presumption of the confessional belief in heaven assumes God exists and essay rubric, that this existing God provides us with this afterlife exoneration for our suffering. Despite biblical assurances and interview paper, mystical testimonies in essay writing rubric grade support of this fundamental religious belief, I suggest that it should not be presupposed in a rational theodicy. All we can assume is that we are finite creatures who have the opportunity to experience value. Write Interview In Research? To expect that we must experience absolute value is asking to essay writing rubric be God-like. God, I assume, by definition (as perfection), experiences all value, but why must finite, limited creatures experience such perfection to justify God's creation of a world of suffering?
I say this in my proposal for a rational theodicy, despite my personal belief in paper a heaven). I have argued in more detail elsewhere against writing rubric the assumption of heaven as a resolution to causes american essays theodicy, concluding that the appeal to an afterlife redemption is at best problematic and at worse insidious.37 The point I wish to 8 make here is that the aesthetic solution stands on its own, without such an write in research, appeal, hence avoiding a supernatural resolution to a rational problem, to writing 8 an issue which seeks a rational resolution. IN this sense I understand the rational theologian who would contend that if belief in write interview in research heaven were to essay writing rubric grade be eschatologically confirme, it would be a 'problematic luxury' at best,38, that it is not needed to resolve the theodicy issue. I agree on math homework, a personal level only with the grade 8 latter statement. The fact that we have the opportunity to experience value in this earthly existence, no matter how unfair the distribution of opportunities, justifies earthly life and belief in in research paper God. If there is a God who is the source of these possibilities, luring us to actualise the best possible values at each moment, this exonerates God for luring the primeval chaos into this world, bearing in mind that 'this world' has taken its shape by unconscious evolutionary forces that seem to be controlled only by a gentle persuasive hand of God, rather than controlled harshly by unilateral or coercive power. The evidence, I submit, is for a persuasive God, since the world and its suffering certainly does not seem the product of rubric 8, coercive divine teleology. Such would imply that God is responsible for causing or permitting all of the world's atrocities. Divine persuasive teleology, on the other hand, is consistent with a world of suffering and 5 paragraph on the war, also a world of opportunity, despite the evil and suffering. Free, finite creatures should expect no more than this. Yet if the mystical vision of an afterlife in the presence of God (as I believe personally) then there is more than this physical world of essay rubric, affliction and anguish.
Again, however, my point remains that the aesthetic consideration is a possible basis for a resolution of the theodicy issue does not require this more. But some may want to push the issue further. Does not an causes of the american essays, adequate theodicy require more of an essay, eschatology than I am willing to concede?39 Indeed, without it, without some reward and punishment scheme, without some final accounting and resolution of the goods and evils we have experienced, would there be any incentive for human beings to math act morally? Would not the writing grade basis of morality be undercut? Would not the least moral among us be inclined to why is unique act in 8 such a way as to obtain for themselves all the value they can, even if it deliberately hurts others? Would there be any point in acting ethically (other than to avoid social punishment) if there is no final accounting in an afterlife? In response, I note that while the vast majority of a research paper, theodicies, historically and contemporaneously, assume an afterlife compensation or resolution to the problem of suffering, and while some notable process theists (John Cobb, David Griffin, Marjorie Suchocki, Lewis Ford, and Joseph Bracken, in particular)40 have argued -- against the formerly prevalent Hartshornean view -- for the possibility of the continuation of human existence in an afterlife, my position is that while I believe this personally, it is not an essential aspect of a rational theodicy.41.
My position, in sum, is that the aesthetic solution answers the essay grade questions supposedly answered by an immortal post mortem realm of math math, redemption from suffering. The aesthetic solution makes it clear, for example, that it is in our best interests to treat others morally since we cannot escape at least some of the consequences of our actions in this earthly realm. Evil acts generally lead to evil consequences, as good acts lead to good ends (although not in exact proportion to the deed, since this would require unilateral divine coercive power). The point is that what we do here and now does matter and does affect us. Bad choices severely limit future possibilities. Essay Grade? Good choices, on the other hand, open up further (and greater) possibilities for aesthetic value. 5 Paragraph Vietnam War? Thus, despite having argued that there are opportunities for good in essay rubric grade 8 every situation, I submit also that our possibilities for good are enhanced by good acts, good choices by why is unique essay, ourselves and by others and by natural processes, all of which affect us. This, for me at least, is essay rubric grade justification enough to act for good ends, without the interview paper lure of an afterlife reward for doing so and without the threat of an afterlife punishment for not doing so. It is essay 8 also justification enough, for american essays me, to believe in a God who has given human beings and other species the essay grade 8 opportunity, despite our finite nature, to paper experience aesthetic value appropriate in every situation. I do not think we should expect more than this from God, at essay writing rubric grade 8, least in unique essay seeking a purely rational theodicy that holds personal religious beliefs temporarily in suspension.
Rationally, minimally, it is a privilege to 'be' and if we accept what we are, asking for more seems to be asking to be other than we are, and asking for God to be other than God is. 8? God has provided at least minimal aesthetic value and is active in leading us into how to write interview paper, actualizing the best options we can at grade 8, each moment. Being open to God, using our limited freedom to follow His will makes a difference. 1. 'Theodicy' refers both to 'the problem of evil' and to 'a solution to the problem of evil'. 11. I am not suggesting the simplistic and erroneous view that empirical or scientific facts are objective, certain truths, while religious knowledge is merely subjective, illusory or at paper, best uncertain. I accept the views of Thomas Kuhn and lan Barbour, among other contemporary philosophers of science, who have pointed out the subjective side of science, and who have shown parallels in the epistemological bases of religious and scientific 'myths, models and paradigms'. All knowledge, religious or scientific, is essay writing rubric 8 'theory-laden', and saturated with presuppositions and biases, as well as being socially, culturally and essay war, intellectually conditioned. My point, nonetheless, is writing 8 that basic scientific 'truths' have more universal agreement than do the essay on the war religious truths of a particular traditional. 12. See Barry L. 9. This book constructs a process theodicy based largely on 5 paragraph vietnam, Hartshorne's extensive writings. Hartshorne himself has not provided a systematic theodicy (nor, for writing rubric grade 8 that matter, did Whitehead). 15. Here I differ with Hartshorne. See Whitney, Evil and the Process God, Ch. 9. 16.
Complete, unilateral power by God is a meaningless concept, since 'omni' + 'potent' (omnipotent) power implies that God has all the power. This, as Hartshome has argued, would be power over nothing. See Whitney, Evil and the Process God. 17. This, of course, is the critique of process theists against a research paper traditional theism: it acknowledges human free will and responsibility for evil and yet attributes to God an omnipotence which renders this freedom suspect, to say the essay writing rubric least. See also Lewis Ford's response to Basinger and Whitney, in 'Divine Persuasion and Coercion', Encounter 47 (1986): 267-273. 22. This charge has been levied by John Hick against Griffin's version of process theodicy. Griffin's response is in Evil Revisited.
23. Some of the 5 paragraph on the most powerful testimonies of this are recorded in S. Paul Schilling's God and Human Anguish, Ch. Writing Grade 8? 3 (Nashville: Abingdon, 1977). Despite apparently hopeless situations, he cites examples of how people have found meaning in a trusting faith. Vietnam War? 24. The popular view of divine self-limitation to permit human freedom does not resolve the problem. God still would have the power to eliminate evils.
Likewise, the traditional Thomist distinction between divine 'causing' and essay rubric, 'permitting' is problematic, since whatever is permitted by God is caused by God. David Griffin has defended in some detail the math perspective to which I adhere: see his God, Power and writing grade 8, Evil and Evil Revisited. 25. For numerous critical discussions of this point, see Whitney, Theodicy: An Annotated Bibliography on math, the Problem of Evil, 1960-1991. 26. See, for example, Hare and Madden, Evil and [tie Concept of God. Paper? Among the most thorough defenses of the Whiteheadian aesthetics is writing Maurice Barineau's The Theodicy of Alfred North Whitehead (Lanham: University Press of America, 1991).
Barineau contends that 'Whitney is incorrect to positively excluding from process theodicy the idea that God may deliberately will certain evils for aesthetic ends' (106-107), citing my Evil and the Process God. This is a misunderstanding of my argument. I argued that God does not deliberately cause evils for any purpose, a rejection of the 'classical' God of how to write in research, unilateral power. Barineau seems to think that God deliberately can cause certain evils, arguing that this is Whitehead's view. This, of course, is neither Whitehead's view, nor mine, nor any process theologian known to me. 32. I do not intend this to writing 8 be a way out of the difficult central issue I have posed for my theory.
I hold that every experience contains at least minimal value. At times, when the value seems all but nonexistent, we could hold that there is, nevertheless, some value in the experience from using a research paper some perspective. The sufferer, however, experiences value, insofar as within the lifetime of experiences, he/she lives a life which is essay writing 8 justified by at least the opportunity for minimal value. Using A Research Paper? 33. Hartshome argues that there is no 'utterly senseless' or 'unredeemed evil' since 'any evil has value from some perspective, for even to essay grade know it exists is to make it contributory to a good, knowledge itself being a good'. See his A Natural Theology for Our Time (La Salle: Open Court, 1969): 80. See also my detailed discussion in how to write Evil and the Process God, Ch. 9. 34. The cry of Job comes to mind here, the despairing wish that he had never been bom. Simone Weil's caution that we must never lose hope, even in the bleakest circumstances also comes to mind, and seems more akin to my view.
See her Waiting on God (London: Coll ins, 1959). Yet, while Weil refers to situations in which there is no apparent hope, I suggest there is rubric 8 always some value, however minimal. 35. How To Paper? One recent example of writing, gratuitous evil which has been discussed often is australia unique essay William Rowe's scenario of the wounded fawn dying in the forrest, unknown to grade 8 anyone. Rowe claims that this is purely gratuitous evil. See his Philosophy of Religion: An Introduction (Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 1978). A recent response by William Hasker, 'The Necessity of 5 paragraph essay on the vietnam, Gratuitous Evil', is in Faith and rubric, Philosophy 9 (1992): 23-43. Math Homework? Endless examples might be proposed. Essay Rubric? What value is there in the terrifying, painful, brutal, and demeaning experience of being raped? What about a child being sexual abused by its parent, terrorized and mesmerized with fear, pain, shame, and a host of other appalling emotions?
I would answer that there is very little, indeed, minimal value at most. There is, however, opportunity for value and a reaffirmation of meaning in subsequent experiences of the victim. The fact, moreover, that we are finite creatures, the product of chance and of free choices by ourselves and others provides the possibility of causes of the revolution, such experiences. The only guarantee against such evil acts is a God of unilateral power and should such a God use its power, freedom would be violated and if such a God withheld its power, it would be blameworthy for doing so. Traditional theism's view of the all-powerful God has, as such, be a thorn in the side of the essay writing rubric grade theodicy issue. Homework? 36. Hartshorne cites Berdyaev who refers to the doctrine of writing grade, rewards and punishments (in a heaven and hell) as 'the most disgusting morality ever conceived' (cited in Whitney, Evil and the Process God, p. 163). For a discussion of Hartshorne's rejection of 'subjective immortality' in some post mortem existence, see Evil and the Process God, Ch. 9. 37. See Whitney, Evil and the Process God, Ch. The phrase is Hartshorne's. See his Reality as Social Process (Boston: Free Press, 1953), 211. See the discussion in Whitney, Evil and the Process God, Ch. 8? 9. 39. The fact that evil is using a research 'overcome' by God is relevant here. See Whitney, Evil and the Process God, Ch. 9, for a detailed discussion of this point from Hartshome's perspective. There are also numerous references to essay Whitehead's defense of this point.

9. Math Math? The same view has been espoused most strongly by Hartshorne and Schubert Ogden, and accepted (until recently) by most other process thinkers.

negtive homework Copyright 2002 by Elizabeth Yeow. Included here with permission of the author. #9;Every fall excitement fills the air as students arrive at school with new backpacks and essay school supplies, eager to meet their new teacher. Always a new beginning, the start of essay, school allows every student to have a fresh beginning and make this year the best year ever.
Yet within weeks of the essay rubric grade, start of school, teachers begin to see a certain pattern emerging: the same students repeatedly neglect to turn in homework. Write Interview In Research! The teacher will then remind, reprimand, take away recess, and threaten to call home and talk to their mom and dad. Occasionally, this will work and the student will miraculously appear with homework in hand, most of the time there are just excuses. Rubric Grade! More often, the teacher becomes more frustrated and disheartened, the student#146;s grades drop and he or she will feel like a failure. Presentation On Operating! The repetition of this scenario caused me to essay writing really consider the value and effect of homework. Every year, and this year is no exception, I have at least one student, usually two, who never bring their completed homework back on time. I was puzzled by these students#146; attitudes towards homework. I wanted to math homework understand more about essay writing rubric 8 their perceptions of homework and to paper find out what kind of support they were receiving at home.
Perhaps, these students do not understand the homework or maybe their parents are unable to essay writing rubric grade 8 help them. Maybe the instructions were unclear or the homework is too difficult for them. A Research! I wanted to understand more about their parents#146; views about school and homework. Writing Grade 8! I also wanted to know more about other issues that may be going on at home. What are some things that I could do to help them bring their homework back? As I began this study, I had several assumptions. I saw homework is an important part of their schoolwork and homework is a reinforcement of what is learned at school.
This extra practice is rubric, helpful to of the essays students and when students do not do their homework it affects how they do in school. Also, lack of finished homework may be an writing grade indication of their attitude towards school or learning. I teach at Clara Barton Elementary School (pseudonym), a public elementary school in the suburbs of a metropolitan area, about 15 miles outside of Washington, DC. At the beginning of of the revolution essays, this school year Clara Barton Elementary School switched from a traditional school calendar to a year round calendar. On the grade, year round calendar school is in session for nine weeks and then there is a two or three week intersession break. Interview Paper! During the intersession remediation and enrichment classes are offered to students. The cost of attending intersession is five dollars. The community around Clara Barton Elementary School is comprised of single family homes, townhouses, and multifamily dwellings. Writing 8! The majority of the students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School live in the townhouse community directly behind the school.
The townhouse community accepts Section 8 housing certificates. Paper! Many of the townhouses house more than one family. There is a high transience rate at rubric 8, Clara Barton Elementary School of about 40 percent. Seventy-five percent of the causes of the revolution, school is composed of ethnic- and language-minority students. Writing Rubric Grade 8! More than 22 countries and many different languages are represented at Clara Barton Elementary School. Math! Many of the students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School are from essay writing rubric 8 low-income families. Clara Barton Elementary School receives funding from Title I and many of the students receive free or reduced lunches. The school is how to interview paper, organized primarily into self-contained classrooms. The school does not have a formal homework policy, but in the staff handbook there is a recommended amount of time students should spend on homework based on 8, grade level. Third grade students should have between 30-60 minutes of homework per evening.
The school slogan is Clara Barton Reads and students are encouraged to read 20 minutes at home every night as part of their homework. This is my fourth year teaching and using a research I have taught third grade at essay grade 8, Clara Barton Elementary for all four years. I am an Asian female. The students in causes american revolution essays, my class are all in essay writing rubric grade, the third grade. Unique Essay! The class is composed of 18 students, 8 boys and writing 8 10 girls. Sixteen out of the essay war, 18 are ESOL students. Eight of the students speak Spanish at home, 5 speak Vietnamese, and 1 speaks another language. Homework in my classroom is writing grade 8, assigned Monday through Thursday evenings and usually includes spelling, reading, and math. When students arrive at school in homework, the morning they take out their homework and stack it on a table at the back of the room. While they are putting their backpacks, books, and jackets away I check in their homework.
Any student who does not bring in completed homework has to finish their homework during free activity time. Selecting a Focus Group. As I looked over my homework grade sheet I noticed that I had three students, all boys, who repeatedly did not bring in their homework. Two of the boys, Jose and Juan (pseudonyms), are Hispanic and one, Aaron (pseudonym), is African-American. Rubric Grade 8! Originally I decided to look at all three students, but then Juan moved mid-year. So, I had two students to focus on, but the more I collected data and homework reflected I realized that I really was focusing more on Jose. Due to time constraints and the inability to contact Aaron#146;s mother I decided to focus this study about Jose. #9;Jose is a third grade, ESOL student. His primary language is essay writing grade 8, Spanish; however he is very fluent in English. Jose has helped translate a few words for me before. Math Math! He is the oldest child in essay writing rubric grade 8, his family and has one younger sibling who is not old enough yet for school.
He lives with his mother, father, grandmother, and essay younger sister. Essay Rubric! His father and mother both work full-time. His father often has to causes work night shifts and essay grade 8 sometimes does not get to see Jose much because of 5 paragraph, his work schedule. Jose has attended Clara Barton Elementary School since kindergarten and grade 8 lives in the townhouse community behind the school. Jose loves to draw during his free moments and will frequently take out a notebook and draw action figures. Jose takes Tae Kwon Doe classes in how to interview in research paper, the evenings and essay writing rubric grade 8 frequently talks about how he enjoys these classes. He is well-liked at school and has many friends, both boys and girls, in his class.
He is reading on grade level, but his writing and math homework math math are below grade level. Frequently Jose needs short extensions on in-class assignments. As I considered my puzzlement over students#146; attitudes towards homework I realized there may be many different things contributing to this puzzling situation. My own beliefs and values may be contributing to essay writing rubric this puzzling situation. Perhaps my expectations for completed homework are too high or I am giving too much homework. My expectation that students should have and do homework may be influenced by my experience with homework as a child. #9;In the system, last thirty years the controversy over the value of homework has come up again and essay writing rubric grade 8 again. Depending on the decade there are either demands for more homework or cries for less homework.
Proponents for homework believe that it can help students retain more, improve study skills, and teach students that learning can take place anywhere. In addition, homework can promote independence and responsibility and it can help parents connect with what their children are learning in school. Opponents of presentation on operating system, homework believe that homework can hinder children from participating in other beneficial activities, such as sports or scouts. In addition, parental involvement with homework can confuse students if their parents use techniques that are different than their teachers. Homework can also accentuate the essay writing grade 8, disparity between students from low-income homes and students from middle-class homes.
Students from low-income homes may have more difficulty completing an assignment (Cooper, 2001). It is also possible that there is a cultural mismatch between what is emphasized at home and what is how to write in research, emphasized at school. My belief that homework is essay rubric grade 8, important and should be given Monday through Thursday nights is also emphasized by paper system, the administration at my school. Essay Rubric Grade! Perhaps Jose#146;s parents do not value schoolwork and homework as much as it is emphasized in of the american, school. They may feel that homework is repetitious and unnecessary for their child.
Maybe they feel they can provide more authentic learning after school for their children by providing them with cultural, athletic, or other experiences. Parents may feel that these other activities will benefit their child more and may therefore not stress homework. 8! It is also possible that parents may not value school and this feeling is why is essay, conveyed to students. Outside influences may also affect Jose. Perhaps he has seen older friends or relatives who do not do their homework. He may view these older ones as cool or maybe he has seen kids on television or in movies that do not do their homework. Another outside influence might be the economic situation of the family.
The family may be struggling to make ends meet and there may be difficulties at home that are a higher priority to students than homework. #9;These cultural influences are important for me to look at because they could change the way I administer homework or the amount of homework that I give. After considering all of the possible cultural influences, I decided to narrow them down to essay rubric 8 the two that I believe to be the most significant. How To Write Paper! The two cultural influences that I thought might be the most applicable to my puzzlement are teacher beliefs (CIP 3.1) and a cultural mismatch between home and school (CIP 3.3.2). My beliefs as the teacher affect my giving of homework, my expectation that it be done, and essay rubric grade how much I actually assign to students.
I believe that one of the strongest influences on young children is their family and their home. Since young children are still very much under the direct charge of their parents, if they bring in their homework or not is especially dependent on why is, their parents. Essay Writing! Their parents have control over whether or not they are given time after school to complete homework. The school culture emphasizes an importance on homework and homework this may not coincide with parental beliefs or practices. This discord will ultimately affect how a child is perceived by his/her teacher and essay grade 8 how successful he/she is academically. In order to determine what cultural influences were contributing to my puzzlement I needed to gather information about causes of the american essays my beliefs. I chose to look at these by journaling, a technique recommended in rubric, the Cultural Inquiry Process (Jacob, 1999).
In my journaling I needed to consider why this situation was puzzling to me and why I think this situation is happening. My beliefs, background, and essay previous experience influence how I look at rubric grade 8, this puzzling situation and how I approach this situation. If I can identify my beliefs and values then I can see how they might be contributing to the puzzling situation. After reflecting and journaling about my homework beliefs I had the opportunity to discuss the using a research, topic of writing rubric grade 8, my research with my colleagues at school. Causes Of The American Revolution! Through this discussion I realized that I should ask them what their beliefs were about homework and find out writing grade 8 how much homework the other third grade teachers were giving (CIP 4.1). #9;Information also needed to be gathered about a mismatch between the student#146;s home culture and the school curriculum (CIP 4.3.2). The school or the school district might have a homework policy that I am unaware of.
If there is a homework policy then there is paper presentation on operating, not a strong emphasis on essay writing rubric, it and it does not seem to math influence teachers and how often or how much homework they give. Weisenthal, Cooper, Greenblatt Marcus, (1997) found that schools with a strong emphasis on homework influenced how often teachers gave homework. I realized it was important to look at the school culture and then to look at the home culture and see if there was a mismatch. In order to find out writing 8 more information about Jose#146;s home culture I considered visiting his home but I had difficulty contacting his parents. I sent many notes home, called home and tried to paper presentation system leave messages. Eventually I was able to speak to Jose#146;s father. I also interviewed students using a modified version of The Student Survey of Homework Practices (Grajria, M. Salend, S. J., 1995) to try to rubric determine what the home environment and culture was like as well as to find out what their attitude was toward homework. I looked at Jose#146;s school history and contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to 5 paragraph war see what Jose had been like as a second grader. #9;I grew up in essay rubric grade 8, an environment where receiving and doing homework was part of system, a daily routine. Teachers gave me homework, my parents expected that I would have it done, and if I did not do it I felt horrible.
My parents always made sure that my homework was done when I was in elementary school. By the essay 8, time I reached middle school and high school I had acquired the habit of doing homework independently. I have always believed that homework helps students learn and using reinforces concepts. The question I have to ask myself in this puzzlement is Do I know for sure that homework benefits students? In order to answer this question I decided to essay writing rubric 8 look at some research that has been done on revolution, the benefits or detriments of homework. The correlation between completing homework and academic achievement has been the subject of much research.
Depending on which side of the homework argument one is on, research can have both positive and negative effects on students. According to writing rubric Cooper (2001) some positive academic effects of paper system, homework include retention and understanding of material, improved study skills, improved attitudes toward school. Some nonacademic effects of homework include promoting independent and responsibility in students and involving parents in what is writing 8, going on in the classroom. Homework also has some negative effects, such as boredom, denying students leisure time and why is the benefits of wholesome learning from scouts or sports. Homework can lead to grade cheating and can emphasize the disparity between the homes of low-income and middle class students. Students from low-income homes may have to work after school or may not have a quiet place to math study at home. When looking at essay writing grade 8, 50 studies done on how to write interview in research, homework and student achievement, Cooper (2001) found that homework had little or no effect on student achievement at the elementary level. #9;After reading some research on 8, the effects of homework on academic achievement I had to seriously consider how my beliefs fit into this. I realized that giving homework benefited me as the teacher.
These benefits matched the benefits teachers expressed having in the Homework Attitude and Behaviour Inventory for Teachers (Weisenthal et al., 1997). Homework improved my ability to cover the curriculum and acted as a kind of using, bridge between the last lesson and the next one. Although homework benefited me, as the teacher, I found myself reconsidering why I was handing out homework to students. According to Kralovec and essay writing 8 Buell (2001), elementary school students show no significant academic gain from doing homework. So, if homework was not helping students academically then how worthwhile was giving homework? #9; I found out that the essay on the vietnam, other two third grade teachers, both males, at my school were not giving as much homework as I was. One teacher usually gave only spelling and reading as homework. Every once in a while he would give math homework. The other third grade teacher usually gave math and reading as homework and rarely gave spelling homework.
I, on the other hand, gave math, spelling, and reading as homework. Why weren#146;t the other teachers giving as much homework as I was? According to Weisenthal et al. (1997) some teachers may go easy on themselves so they have less homework to collect and to grade. I decided to go back and interview the rubric 8, other third grade teachers to find out what their beliefs about homework were. One of the teachers did not believe that giving homework was a big deal unless a child did not understand the homework. He believed that homework should be given for math homework students to build responsibility and for character building. In his experience the essay writing grade, ones that don#146;t bring their homework back are usually the ones that don#146;t understand the concepts. He also felt that at causes of the american revolution, the elementary level if students pay attention in class then they will achieve and writing rubric grade 8 homework will not necessarily help them achieve. The other third grade teacher believed that homework should be a reinforcement of what is taught in school and he felt that it made a difference in their achievement at school. Presentation! He said that he could tell the next day by student performance if a student did or did not do their homework.
He also believed that homework helped students learn to essay rubric grade 8 be responsible and build a good work ethic. After discussing homework policies and their beliefs about how to write in research homework with my colleagues I went to the principal and asked her if we had a school wide homework policy. Essay Writing Rubric 8! She referred me to the staff handbook. Although there is using paper, not a school wide homework policy, there were some generally accepted principles that should govern teachers when assigning homework. Some of the principles include, flexibility and differences in rubric grade 8, the assignments to individual students, homework should be reasonable in view of the pupil#146;s situation including health, housing conditions, outside work or responsibility, leisure-time activity and conflicting demands of how to write paper, home and essay writing school.
On the essay, daily announcements students are encouraged to essay read for 20 minutes every night as homework. Any homework given out in addition to this is up to the individual teacher. I also looked through Homework Helper: A Guide for on operating system Teachers which was published by the school district. This guide was handed out at essay writing rubric 8, a staff meeting at the beginning of the school year and essay vietnam teachers were encouraged to use it as a guide. Since that time homework has not been discussed with the staff. Rubric! According to the guide the purpose of homework is to practice skills, reinforce academic concepts, extend learning, promote good study skills, apply new skills and concepts, involve parents, and develop positive attitudes toward school and learning. The guide does not discuss the amount of homework to paper presentation system be given. Any homework, aside from the daily reading, is up to grade the individual teacher.
#9;In order to gather more information about math homework Jose#146;s home culture I tried to contact Jose#146;s parents through notes and phone calls home. After repeated attempts to contact Jose#146;s parents, his father appeared one afternoon at my classroom door. Essay Writing 8! It appeared that he had finally received one of the many messages I left for him. I was very excited to meet with him, but wondered how the meeting would go as we did not have a translator. After a few minutes I thought it would be appropriate because it seemed that he had enough of how to write interview in research, a grasp of the English language for writing rubric 8 us to be able to communicate without a translator. Why Is Essay! Our meeting was short (we really did need a translator). I asked him a few questions about his job and Jose#146;s behavior and work habits at home.
He seemed very responsive and essay grade 8 concerned. Apparently Jose had been telling him since the beginning of the year that he did not have any homework. He had believed Jose and did not try to contact me to confirm it. He and his wife both worked long hours and many times he had to using a research work the night shift. Often when Jose comes home his mother is at work and his father is either at work or sleeping. His grandmother, who speaks only writing rubric grade 8 Spanish, is there to watch him. In Research Paper! Jose#146;s father said that he or his wife always asked Jose if he had finished his homework. He did mention that one afternoon when he told Jose his friend had to go home he saw Jose give his friend a piece of paper that looked like homework.
His father didn#146;t ask about it and forgot about it until his meeting with me. The weekly notes that I had been sending home did not reach Jose#146;s parents either. Jose#146;s father suggested that he could sign Jose#146;s homework every evening and maybe this would help Jose do his homework and bring it to school. The day after meeting with Jose#146;s father, Jose did not have his homework. He did bring his homework the next day signed by his father, but since then he hasn#146;t had anything signed by either parent. #9;I realized through this brief interaction with Jose#146;s father that he and his wife both cared about essay rubric 8 their son and his success in school. However, I realized that they also had other things, such as tae kwon do lessons, that they wanted their son to learn. Gonz á lez (1995) points out how important it is for teachers to know their students#146; culture and to not have a prepackaged awareness of cultural diversity. They were providing nonacademic experiences for their son that they felt were important for his development as a person. In addition, I realized that Jose#146;s father wanted his son to do his homework, but was very limited due to his work schedule to encourage and help Jose. I#146;m not sure why Jose#146;s mother did not return phone calls or come to school with Jose.
I have only seen Jose#146;s father with him when attending school events. Although Jose#146;s father indicated that they asked Jose about his homework they did not seem to do anything to encourage or require that Jose do his homework. Since they may not have been encouraging him to do his homework Jose may have been getting the message that homework was not valuable to his parents. #9;I contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to discuss his homework habits in essay war, second grade. I found out that he rarely brought in finished homework and Jose#146;s second grade teacher frequently tried to contact his parents to discuss work habits. She noticed that when his father had to essay work the night shift Jose came to school quite disheveled and homework math without any homework. When Jose#146;s father switched to grade working during the day Jose seemed more attentive in school and sometimes was able to bring in 5 paragraph essay war, finished homework. #9;To find out math homework math my class#146; attitude and homework habits I passed out the Homework Survey to my whole class and read it to essay rubric them as they circled responses. - Activities such as sports and music are more important to me than doing my homework. - Someone checks my homework for me when I am done. - Someone at home asks me if I have finished my homework. I handed out the surveys and then read through each item and explained any of the questions that students did not understand. As I looked over the surveys I realized that my students were limited in their ability to self-report because of their young age and rubric their self-reports may not be identical to their actual practices at home.
For example, Aaron reported that he always turned in his homework when he actually rarely turned in his homework. Paper Presentation System! Nine students, half of the class indicated that they need someone to essay writing remind them to do their homework. Paper System! Half the class indicated that they sometimes need help with their homework. Since Jose frequently talked about essay Tae Kwon Do lessons and other things that he did during the week with his parents, I realized that it was important to them for their son to be trained in some kind of sport. They might also feel that as a growing boy Jose needed some physical activity after school. Although Jose indicated that his parents asked him about writing rubric grade his homework they did not ask to see his homework. They believed him when he said he did not have homework or that he had finished his homework. Math Math! It is possible that they did not have the time or energy to essay writing rubric grade look at his homework.
They both worked long hours and it is possible that they had many daily survival demands that are more important than Jose#146;s elementary school homework. Since outside influences can not always be controlled or changed, I realized that interventions had to be made at the school or classroom level to help students (CIP 5.4.1). On Operating System! It seemed that Jose was not getting the essay writing, support that he needed from how to in research paper home because his parents#146; time is occupied with work and essay grade other basic survival issues, so one intervention was to give less challenging homework. Although all the homework I give students should be able to do independently, he had indicated on his Homework Survey that he needed help a lot. His parents#146; limited English may affect Jose, so I tried to give more homework that was self-explanatory and made sure that he understood all the directions before he left school. Another intervention I tried was to allow Jose to begin his homework at school. I let him start his homework at using a research paper, school. He has gotten used to checking with me before leaving. For about two weeks I reminded him that he needed to see me before he walked out the door. Now he remembers on his own that he has to show me his homework inside his backpack. 8! He comes up to me with his backpack open and his homework at the top so I can see it. Causes! Summary and causes of the american essays Implications. After all the writing rubric 8, interventions and monitoring I can say that Jose turns in 5 paragraph on the vietnam, his homework about half the time. For the first half of the year he rarely turned in any homework assignments and the ones he turned in were usually unfinished.
He seems to have more of an understanding that for me doing homework is writing, just as important as doing work in school. I also have a better understanding of his home situation and that although his parents want him to do well in causes american essays, school they also have other things that they feel are important for Jose to learn. The communication between home and school is definitely better. Essay 8! In addition I feel that I am more aware that the situation at home greatly affects students#146; ability to work on homework and bring it back to school. This inquiry and research on the benefits and negative effects of homework on students like Jose has really caused me to rethink why I give homework and the amount of homework I give. 5 Paragraph On The War! I realized that my beliefs and values about homework really contributed to my puzzlement. I have really been considering and debating within myself the issue of essay rubric grade 8, homework.
I feel like I have been forcing my culture and background on students and making them relive how I went through school. Do I give homework for character building or do I really believe that it will help students#146; academic achievement? Checking homework usually takes fifteen minutes in the morning. Maybe this time would be better spent giving minilessons at the beginning of the day or building community in the classroom. Although the school and school district set policies for homework, they do not stress that homework must be given every night. American Revolution Essays!
